A low-angle, upward-looking shot captures two industrial freight cars resting on a rusted steel railroad bridge. The composition is dominated by heavy metal textures and straight horizontal lines. In the lower-left foreground, a silver metal staircase with a mesh landing and handrails extends into the frame. Above this, the bridge’s main structural beam is visible, showing significant weathering with patches of orange rust and peeling white paint. A thin horizontal pipe runs along the side of the bridge.

Odd that I never post about UX related things when that was the intent of getting onto social media. I’ve only ever posted photos and book reviews. I’m thinking about changing that up a bit because I have a lot to say about UX.

This book made me jealous that Sy Montgomery has had the chance to meet and interact with Octopuses. I really want to go meet one and try to be friends with it, see if it’ll playfully splash me, or hold my hand. Guess I’m going to go see if there’s any aquariums that offer a meet and greet.
Did I learn if the plural of octopus is octopuses or octopi? No, but Sy shares stories of several octopi she’s connected with over the years, some anthropomorphized, some made you think about what’s going on in tiny alien heads, and some where sentimental and heart-breaking.

It’s a good time to be alive basically. Every technology we have is making major strides forward. Everything from healthcare to energy is reaching unexpected advances. Superconvergence looks at how AI, genome editing and robotics aren’t just improving in a vaccuum on their own, but are helping to advance each other at a breakneck pace.
The problem with this innovation is that our laws and ethics are running on old software by old people who don’t understand what’s happening.

For some reason I thought that if I just ignored the fact that my car is sitting under a 4 foot embankment of snow that it would just get warmer and work itself out, but it turns out that it hasn’t been above 15 degrees all week. Guess I’m just going to have to get out there and shovel the snow.

I recently completed the DHS Section 508 Trusted Tester Certification.
After years in the accessibility space, I can value how tactical this process is compared to the more interpretive nature of WCAG.
It’s an approachable framework but I feel like it doesn’t do enough and sets a really low bar for accessibility. I do hope the government continues to scale and to improve it.

Social media hasn’t just sped up the pace of linguistics shifts, but some of the language we’ve been adopting online has been out of a need to bypass automated moderation as tactical necessity. Not only does this book explore the etymology of terms we are hearing every day, but it reveals how we are appropriating terms from nice subcultures.
If you’re a language nerd, check it out. For those that are still here and haven’t been unalived, it’s prolly a joy to read too tho.

Susannah Breslin was “Data Baby #6” and part of a thirty-year longitudinal study at UC Berkeley that tracked her life from nursery school to adulthood. Can you imagine what it’s like being watched by researchers who just might know more about your psychological makeup that you do?
She shares stories of blocks, 2-way mirrors, puzzles, and “personality profiles” that reduced her childhood to a set of data points, all while opening up about writing about the porn industry, battling her cancer, the struggles with her parents, and getting out of a terrible marriage.
