✨ Evals speak loudly. But it’s the quieter signals, alignment, bias, context, that decide whether we can trust the system at all. Today’s Evaluating AI Systems session, organised by SwissNLP and the Data Innovation Alliance at ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences during Swiss {ai} Weeks, three perspectives made that visible to me. 🔹 Katherine Munro showed what it means for Swisscom to evaluate without a baseline, and why agility sometimes means slowing down, one update per sprint, tested for relevance, latency, factuality, and grounded in domain expertise. 🔹Pius von Däniken at ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences presented research and pressing issue on how metrics themselves introduce bias, making clear that averages don’t tell the truth without calibration and human feedback. 🔹Florian Schottmann of Supertext reminded us that context changes everything, claims of “human parity” dissolve once you move from sentences to whole documents. 📌 What we can all learn across these perspectives is that evaluation isn’t just about metrics or methods. It only starts to mean something once orchestration enters the picture, when teams align, when measures are calibrated, when context is honoured. 🇨🇭 Apertus, Switzerland's Open-Source Multilingual LLM Switzerland has unveiled Apertus, its first large-scale, open and multilingual large language model. Developed by EPFL, ETH Zurich, and CSCS, Apertus comes in 8B and 70B parameter versions released under Apache 2.0 with full transparency of training data, documentation, and model weights. Apertus sets new standards for open AI with its emphasis on sovereignty, reproducibility, and regulatory compliance. Both models are now globally accessible on Hugging Face and AWS SageMaker, making it easy for researchers, developers, and enterprises worldwide to build on Swiss values of openness, sovereignty, and inclusivity. And available on Swisscom’s sovereign Swiss AI platform for business customers. The Medium piece provides a thorough technical examination of both Apertus models, 70B and 8B parameter variants. Meet Bertrand Meyer, a pioneer of software engineering and object technology. He is Professor of Software Engineering Emeritus and former head of the computer science department at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) and CTO at Eiffel Software and Recognyze AI (Santa Barbara). Meyer is the inventor of "Design by Contract" (DbC) methodology and other well-established software principles such as Command-Query Separation. His research covers formal methods and proofs, language design, requirements, testing, project management. Two of his recent books (Springer) have become references in their fields: "Handbook of requirements and business analysis" and "Agile! The Good, the Hype and the Ugly", a tutorial and critique of agile methods. His ACM awards include: Software System Award, ACM Fellow and ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Educator Award for his "inverted curriculum" approach to teaching programming.
