Open Source should mean "Open" - Why Pimcore’s license shift is a wake-up call As an agency owner relying on Drupal as our main framework, I’ve always valued the trust that comes from offering clients a truly open-source solution. That’s why Pimcore’s recent license changes caught my attention - and not in a good way. With their new pricing model, companies over €5 million revenue now must buy the Professional Edition starting at €8,400 per year. Higher tiers go up to €25,200 and beyond. For agencies who’ve been pitching Pimcore as a no-license, open-source platform, this is a tough turn. It’s now harder to justify the total cost of ownership, especially when clients expected budget-friendly flexibility. Meanwhile, Drupal continues to do what open source was meant to do: stay open - and we should all value this even more. No license fees. No usage thresholds. No surprise paywalls. Just a robust, enterprise-ready CMS backed by a huge global community and rapid innovation. And on the innovation front, Drupal is pulling ahead - especially with its upcoming Experience Builder and its bustling AI ecosystem with features such as: - Integrations with OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and many more - Multi-agent orchestration with AI swarms (no or low-code) - Function calling for dynamic automation - Full support for MCP (Model Context Protocol) - RAG-infrastructure - Chatbot-integration - and a much, much more. This reflects a broader political narrative, not just grid concerns: skepticism about AI’s societal impacts, which too often gets tethered to infrastructure debates like data centers.

As I’ve been playing around with Claude Code and agents that can have context and reach beyond even the repo you’re working in, I’ve wondered if we should have tests written fully separate from the code available to an agent’s context. They submit the code and get the response back and need to solve, and can even get the full suite of “expects” in advance. But they can’t modify or see the underlying test setup. (I don’t know that this kind of separation is possible in a local machine, feels like it’s a boundary that needs to be set up across machines, which means the test suite needs to be maintained and set up in a different “machine”, even if it’s virtual)
