.TH timed 8
'''
.SS NAME
\fBtimed\fR \- time synchronization service (SNTP)
'''
.SS DESCRIPTION
This service polls a remote NTP server on regular intervals (15 minutes
to 1 hour) and adjusts system clock to match.
'''
.SS USAGE
The service starts idle. Set up the system so that once network becomes
available, \fBtictl\fR would be called to supply \fBtimed\fR with server
addresses to use. It is fine to supply multiple servers; \fBtimed\fR will
pick the closest.
.P
Once the server has been chosen, \fBtimed\fR should step the clock instantly
to bring it within 0.5s from the refence time. Past that point, unless sudden
jumps in time are detected, adjustments will be done slowly over periods of
around half an hour.
.P
In case the primary server stops responding, \fBtimed\fR will try to switch
to one of the spares. Servers added while the primary server is still usable
will be stored, but no attempts will be made to poll them until the primary
fails. It is generally a good idea to keep supplying new addresses occasionally
while \fBtimed\fR is running, to make sure it has some spares ready.
'''
.SH FILES
.IP "/run/ctrl/timed" 4
Control socket.
.P
\fBtimed\fR does not store anything in the file system, and does not need
any file access rights except for \fBbind\fR(2) on its control socket.
