Facets as a Formatting Engine

Formatting is an important tool for emphasizing your point. We use it to highlight key parts of our work every day, including when developing services. One interesting example is Facets - a formatting approach in atproto.

So I Had Brain Surgery

Right, so. I had brain surgery. Last Friday, the 17th. It’s fine, I’m fine, everything is fine — I’m writing this from home and I’m recovering well and there’s really no need to make a fuss.

Changelog for Oregontennis.org

This is the first year of actual tennis rankings results, we've never had them in the past. tennisreporting -- the official site of the OSAA for tennis recordkeeping -- does track wins and stats, but it's rankings are not very good and are ignored. A coaches poll in tennis like in other sports presupposes you've seen the other teams around the state, but tennis is pretty regional in a large state like ours, so it wouldn't work quite as well.

Atmosphere Account Resilience

These days I largely stay out of conversations about ActivityPub and atproto. Folks i respect like @blaine.bsky.social and @thisismissem.social have asserted that over time the paths that ActivityPub and atproto take will converge.

The Arbiter - Group Management for Permissioned Spaces and Beyond

The permissioned data proposal has the concept of membership, but leaves it to the app to orchestrate it. The arbiter is our idea for a general-purpose, interoperable ATProto group membership service.

The Future of Science Depends on Open Source Engineers

The processes of modern science, from how research gets funded and conducted to how it gets published, evaluated, and preserved, were never engineered. They emerged over hundreds of years, built by researchers and institutions one workaround at a time. What we call "the scientific system" is really a patchwork of customs, formats, and platforms that were never designed to work together, never stress-tested at scale, and never designed to evolve.

My updates about swimming keep aging fast, and that's a good sign. Last month, I mentioned I was finally having lessons at the deep end of the pool, and how it was being a blast. So much happened the past three weeks though!

The trait 'jacquard::types::collection::Collection' is not implemented for CreateRecord<'_>

In the code above, the agent.create_record() method requires a type that implements the trait jacquard::types::collection::Collection. The problem is that bookmark_record's type, CreateRecord, does not implement that trait. The types listed here are the only ones that implement that trait.

On User

User experience, as tool designers imagine themselves to become the user, asks how one might be assisted in expressing inner ideas with the external tool in hand. Experience excites the body to release dopamine, to stir the sensation of purposeful control with which the user can summon satisfying artefacts (satisfying in its aesthetics, expressiveness, and quality). Therefore the process, to some degree universal, can be well defined and then commercialised. Corporations would like to propagate the term, user.

This is a test post of something longer form. Starting this Sunday, you'll hear about a few liturgies to formally begin Pope Leo XIV's ministry. “Close to Zero”

“Close to Zero”

On May 29, 2024, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek tweeted something that sent shockwaves through the music community: “Today, with the cost of creating content being close to zero, people can share an incredible amount of content”. He later attempted to walk back the statement, calling his definition of “content” (yes, he called music “content”) “clumsy” and “very reductive”. But the damage was done, revealing just how disconnected the billionaire architect of modern music streaming is from the actual econ...
