12 Unique 3D CAD Configurators Now Live in Production 🚀 Collaboration between The Shim Shack and bitbybit.dev has resulted in 12 custom CAD configurators, now live on a production e-commerce platform. I’m especially proud of this project because it demonstrates how Bitbybit Runners can bring powerful 3D design experiences directly into existing websites - making them accessible to both non-experts and businesses. 🔗 Blog post: https://lnkd.in/dB_CcttV 🔗 4K on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/dyCFFNah 🔗 Live site: https://lnkd.in/dxAQXj2B About the project The Shim Shack is a U.S.-based manufacturer specializing in custom shims, brackets, spacers, washers, mounting plates, and other precision metal parts. Every part is laser-cut to exact specifications - any dimension, any configuration. Their Build Your Parts portal allows customers to design and order custom components directly online. Why Runners? From the start, it was clear that Runner technology was the ideal foundation. Runners allow Bitbybit scripts to be embedded and executed on virtually any website - including WordPress with WooCommerce - without disrupting existing systems. 🔗 Learn more about Runners: https://lnkd.in/d6TkphpS Key advantages Instead of rebuilding the platform, we preserved the existing infrastructure and layered 3D configurators on top. Each configurator runs as a self-contained script within product pages - making them easy to maintain, update, and scale independently. This approach saved significant development time and kept the focus where it matters most: delivering a powerful and intuitive configurator experience. Designed for real users These tools aren’t just for CAD engineers. They’re built for maintenance technicians, facility managers, and procurement specialists - people who need custom parts but don’t work in CAD software daily. Each configurator: - Validates inputs against real manufacturing constraints - Prevents invalid geometry (e.g., overlapping features or insufficient material) - Provides clear, actionable error messages - Once a design is ready, users can add it to the cart and purchase, part gets manufactured and delivered based on specification - It is also possible to export to STEP and DXF files for downstream engineering workflows #TheShimShack #Bitbybit #CAD #3D #3DConfigurator #Manufacturing #LaserCutting #WordPress #WooCommerce #Ecommerce #Geometry #JavaScript #OCCT #DigitalManufacturing #ProductEngineering #Engineering #IndustrialDesign #STEP #DXF #CAE #MassCustomization #Customization #Design #Parametric #ParametricDesign #Web

With Matas Ubarevicius from bitbybit.dev we showcased two OpenCascade-based projects at Hannover Messe. While Matas showcased his product configurator, including real client projects, I presented a fully open-source workflow for product development, including FreeCAD and how I used that to develop our invented bolt. This was a great opportunity to meet each other. Both, bitbybit and FreeCAD, are based on OpenCascade from Capgemini. Because I usually go to trade fairs alone, so that I can better focus on meeting new people from the stands, this was a new experience. Meeting Matas there made the event more fun, because we could reflect on each others new connections at the trade fair. bitbybit.dev creates web product configurators for small to medium sized manufacturers. ALSADO Inh. Aleksander Sadowski provides FreeCAD support to small to medium sized manufacturers. Together, we help manufacturers reduce risk by making them independent from restricting software licenses and increase sales through interactive online shops. 👉 If you are a founder in the space of software for manufacturing, let's meet at Formnext this year or Hannover Messe next year.

bitbybit.dev CAD Cloud is live 🚀 It generates 3D models, runs OCCT pipelines, converts STEP files - all via a simple REST API from any language or backend. It can also run your custom algorithms through tenant workflows (for B2B / enterprise folks). If that’s you - reach out or drop me an email. 👉 Get your API key: https://lnkd.in/dmFYy8pR 🎥 Full 4K walkthrough: https://lnkd.in/dT2jpasT Now, before someone calls me out - “Wait… aren’t you the run everything in the browser guy?” Yes. Yes, I am 😄 And I still believe in it. The browser is amazing. But… what if your model takes an hour to compute? Are you really going to keep that tab open and just… watch it? Or what if you need to generate 1,000+ parametric models per day? At some point - cloud compute, parallelization, and scale just make sense. I’ve been hinting for a while that Bitbybit stack could run on the server. Finally decided to stop hinting and actually build it. It wasn’t easy. But it works. And it’s here. 🎉 As configurators get more complex - and AI starts generating parametric logic on top - I’m pretty convinced cloud-based 3D compute is going to be a core piece of the stack for manufacturing, design, and engineering. #Bitbybit #CAD #3DModeling #CloudComputing #APIs #Engineering #ParametricDesign #DevTools #TechLaunch #OCCT

🚀 Let's meet in HANNOVER MESSE! On Friday, April 24th at 14:00, I’ll be taking the stage to talk about something I care deeply about (and maybe obsess over a little): CAD, code, 3D configurators - and everything behind bitbybit.dev. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dfTMUrrn In my talk, I’ll walk through some of the latest projects I’ve been building with clients, showing how combining open-source and proprietary tools can actually accelerate innovation. I’ll also take on a somewhat controversial idea - that CAD should be for everyone - and back it up with real-world examples, including e-commerce use cases powered by 3D Bits for Shopify. 💬 I’ll be hanging around the CAE-Forum space afterwards - would love to meet, catch up, and chat about parametric design, AI, 3D, or anything in between. If you’re exhibiting, let me know - I’m happy to stop by your booth on the 23rd or 24th. Or just reach out if you’d like to connect - my schedule is still flexible. Also, I highly recommend joining the talk before mine by Aleksander Sadowski - a leading voice in open-source CAD and the author of FreeCAD Beginner's Handbook: 👉 https://lnkd.in/ds-8e_HG Big thanks to Andrea, Aleksander and CAE-Forum for the support and guidance 🙌 Looking forward to seeing many of you there! #Hannover #Germany #Messe #HannoverMesse #Presentation #Bitbybit #3DBits #ECommere #CAD #CAE #CAEForum #Engineering #Talk #Meetup #OCCT #ParametricDesign #FreeCAD #OpenCascade #OpenSource #Web #Browser #WebGPU #WebAssembly #3D #PlayCanvas #BabylonJS #ThreeJS #Geometry #Programming #Software #Industry40 #DigitalTwin #Products #HannoverMesse2026 #Shopify #Ecomm #UseCases #Clients #Projects #3DConfigurators #AI #LLM #Design #IndustrialDesign

🛍️ At bitbybit.dev I’m building tools for the clients who sell products on Shopify by using 3D models 🚀 If you're working with configurable products here's the latest tutorial: https://lnkd.in/dMtHjm5t Yeah, it’s 37 minutes - pretty thorough. Or… I’m just chatty 😊 I explain how the latest features of 3D Bits can help you achieve optimal results (https://lnkd.in/d8cPkHX5) Little secret: it all starts in Blender. Inside, I cover: • packing multiple product variants into a single glTF file • using 3D Bits with Shopify to drive product customization • emulating the GUI from your product page • using templates for draft vs live products • and debugging directly on your product page I know, I know - here I am… still making tutorials in 2026. Who does that? But it's just so much faster to answer client questions with the links to videos, it does make sense to me 😄 AI or not, one thing I keep seeing: the best tangible results come from close collaboration. So if you're building something in this space - or thinking about it - feel free to reach out. And if you're also still watching tutorials in 2026… yeah, we’re in this together 🙂 Thanks Eric Chadwick and The Khronos Group for the amazing assets that make this content possible. 🏗️ CAD experts trying to work with STEP assemblies on the web know the challenges well. Usually, it involves heavy server-side processing or sacrificing data structure. The latest bitbybit.dev release candidate takes a slightly different approach to address this. New algorithms now allow the platform to load, parse, query, and create complex BREp assemblies entirely client-side. The core of Bitbybit can now convert STEP and stpZ files to gLTF while parsing XCAF document labels and attributes. It allows for creating and structuring OCCT shapes into proper assemblies - complete with assigned colors, names, parts, instances, and sub-assemblies. Who will benefit most from this update? - Computational Designers using parametric editors on Bitbybit. - B2B Clients needing custom tools that output professional, well-structured CAD assets. - Developers using Bitbybit NPM packages to build rich 3D apps in #ThreeJS, -#BabylonJS, or #PlayCanvas. - Integration Seekers wanting better interoperability with FreeCAD, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, CATIA and other systems. Explore the release: 📝 Blog Post: https://lnkd.in/d-g9MNyb 💻 Tutorials: https://lnkd.in/dVc_WGef 📺 4K Demo: https://lnkd.in/dUx78t2m 📦 GitHub: https://lnkd.in/dNAzwSVq A special note of thanks to the FreeCAD Project Association and FarmBot Inc communities. Some of the 3D assets seen in the demo come from your contributions, which made testing these features much more effective. P.S. - Release Candidate means that these new features are still evolving.
