Laryngoscopy
A diagnostic procedure that allows a doctor to examine the larynx and vocal cords to detect inflammation, infections and other pathologies of the larynx.
The doctor uses a laryngoscope, an instrument equipped with a light source and an optical system to enlarge the image.
Before performing a laryngoscopy, it may be necessary to abstain from eating and drinking for several hours. In some cases, the doctor may prescribe the prior use of sprays or medications to reduce discomfort.
During the procedure, a laryngoscope is inserted through the patient's mouth or nose to examine the larynx. Using a thin, flexible laryngoscope with a camera at the end allows the doctor to study in detail the condition of the vocal cords and the mucous membrane of the larynx. The duration of the procedure usually ranges from a few minutes to a quarter of an hour, depending on the purpose of the examination.
After laryngoscopy, there may be slight sore throat or discomfort, which usually disappear within a few hours. The doctor can give recommendations on throat care after the procedure and, if necessary, prescribe additional treatment.
