The URL Structure Mistake That's Keeping Your Spanish iGaming Site Invisible Three months ago, I audited a gambling site in Madrid. Beautiful design, killer content, solid backlinks. But their URLs looked like this: "https://lnkd.in/gujWyruu" See the problem? That underscore instead of hyphen? Those accented characters? Google's crawlers were having a nightmare. The site wasn't ranking for anything competitive. Here's what most SEO juniors in Portugal and Spain get wrong about URL structures: Latin characters only. I know, I know. Spanish and Portuguese have beautiful accented letters. But URLs hate them. "prêmios" becomes "pr%C3%AAmios" in the browser. Ugly and confusing. Use "premios" instead. Clean, readable, SEO-friendly. Hyphens beat underscores every time. Google treats hyphens as space separators but reads underscores as connectors. "best-casino-games" gets parsed as three separate words. "best_casino_games" becomes one weird compound word. Shorter is smarter. I've tested this across dozens of iGaming sites. URLs under 60 characters consistently outperform longer ones. Not just for SEO - users actually click more when they can understand the URL at a glance. Bad: "https://lnkd.in/geXmur_f" Good: "https://lnkd.in/gJ2mf4Cj" Folder structure should mirror user thinking. Your URL hierarchy tells Google (and users) how your content relates. For gambling sites, think: /country/game-type/specific-game. Logical. Intuitive. The gambling industry in Spain has unique challenges. Compliance means our URLs need to be crystal clear about what they contain. No ambiguity. No clever wordplay that confuses regulators. I spent two weeks rebuilding that Madrid site's URL structure. Removed all accents, switched underscores to hyphens, shortened everything by 40%. Three months later? Traffic up 60%. Rankings improved across the board. Your URL structure is your site's address system. Make it easy for everyone - bots, users, and compliance officers - to understand where they're going. How far is too far from your core topic? There’s a technical way to think about that. In this clip, Andy Chadwick (Co-Founder, Keyword Insights) explores a fascinating idea 👇 🧠 What if you created vector embeddings for every page on your site… And then measured how semantically “close” new content is to your core topic? If your site is about suitcases, you could theoretically define a threshold: 📊 “We won’t publish anything more than 20% away from our core vector.” Not just: “Does this feel relevant?” But: “Does this mathematically align with our topical footprint?” In reality, most teams still operate on instinct. A bit of “finger in the air” judgment.
